Purpose

The Environmental and Safety Committee develops policy, process, and procedure for Makersmiths spaces and volunteers in three major areas: Life Safety, Industrial Safety, and Environmental Protection. The foundational references for this effort are both statutory and regulatory as promulgated by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) , and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Although not all statutory and regulatory safety standards apply to all-volunteer organizations, they still serve as safety best practices that should be reviewed and considered by the committee.

Composition

Chair: David Lang
Members: Allon Stern, Patrick Waters
Advisors: Leesburg and Purcellville site managers and all shop stewards

Responsibilities

Although safety is everyone’s responsibility, the committee is specifically responsible for delivering environmental and safety policy, process, and procedure to the Board of Directors for approval and implementation.

Meetings

The Committee meets monthly immediately following the monthly membership meeting. Ad Hoc meetings may be held in person, telephonically, or online if a safety issue arises that requires immediate committee discussion. If a decision is required and a two-thirds majority of committee members are not present, the committee chair will use the Environmental and Safety channel of Makersmiths Slack, or any other means that produces an auditable record to detail the issue and acquire a two-thirds majority decision.

All members are welcome and encouraged to attend meetings and interact with the committee on Slack.  Please contact the chair if you'd like to be a member of the committee.
